Legend
According to the legends, once a brahmin named Sridhar lived
at Tirupati Venkatachalam. He fell in love with Padmavathi, an angel who used
to sing songs with her veena for the Lord. Sridhar proposed her for a marriage
which Padmavathi rejected and both of them cursed each other. Both of them
prayed to the Lord to relive them from their curses. Lord Venkateshwara told
Padmavathi will emerge as a river near Godavari and told Sridhar to install an
idol near the river. After that they will be relieved from their curses. Once
Sridhar dreamt of Lord telling him that he emerged as a rock statue in a peepal
tree located at west of River Padmavathi. Next day, Sridhar found that statue
and installed it at the eastern side of the river. Both Sridhar and Padmavathi
got relieved from the curse.
