Legend

According to the legends, Lord Parasurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, performed penance here to seek relieve from the sin of killing his mother.  It is believed that Parasurama has installed 31 Shiva lingas in different places, of which one has been installed here. When the Shiva lingam moved, he assumed that all his sins were removed.

Architecture

The temple has a small tower or gopuram and a dwajasthambam or central pillar situated in front of the sanctum sanctorum. The Shivalingam has a serpent wrapped around it. The temple has entrances on three sides, except in the east. There are two big halls on the southern side of the Kadile Papahareshwara Temple where Annadanam is offered every day.

Culture

As per the culture of the place, people here say that the air around the hills on which the temple is located, the Satmala or the Nirmala Hills, is pure and the entire environment is great for health. Towards the western side of the temple are mountains and it is believed that the cosmic powers that come from the western side are stopped by these mountains.
