Located in Karnataka, Guddattu Vinayaka temple is a famous and ancient temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The temple is also called as Jaladhivasa Ganapathi temple. It is the only Jaladhivasa Ganapathi temple in India. It is believed that the three feet idol of Lord Ganesha has emerged itself from the rock.

Legend

According to the legends, once Lord Shiva went to a war against the demon Tripurasura.

Unfortunately, Lord Shiva forgot to worship Lord Ganesha before going to the war. Because of that Lord Shiva did not gain victory in the war. Lord Shiva became angry after realizing that because of his son Lord Ganesha that he could not gain victory. In anger, Lord Shiva shot dreadful arrows targeting Lord Ganesha. However, no arrow harmed Ganesha. The arrows carried Lord Ganesha and dropped him in the ocean of honey. Lord Ganesha drained the ocean as he is extremely fond of honey. Lord Ganesha became happy and blessed Shiva. After that Lord Shiva gained victory in the war and killed the demon. The excessive consumption of honey caused burning sensation to Lord Ganesha and he began to writhe in pain. Lord Shiva took pity on his son and instructed Ganesha to dwell in the pool adjacent to the holy Narasimhatheertha. Lord Ganesha made the pool in the huge rock his abode.

Architecture

The temple is inside a cave made of hard rocks. In this temple, Lord Ganesha is immersed in neck deep water throughout the year. The temple is situated at the foot of a huge rock which resembles a sitting elephant. The Mukhamantapa, Thirthamantapa, Hebbagilu, Pauli etc. were constructed with granite structure as per temple vastu and is very attractive one.

Aayira koda Seva is the most popular ritual in the temple. The pooja includes bathing the idol with one thousand pots of water. This ritual is performed every morning.
