Legend

Adi Shankara was one of the leading proponents and philosophers of Hinduism. He traveled along the stretch of the country inspiring people with his convictions and beliefs. With the aim of continuing his teachings as well as propagating his doctrines, he established four monasteries in the four corners of the country. Shankara taught that from these four points, the soul could escape the cycle of rebirth and attain 'moksha'. Over the years, this course progressed into a pilgrimage route.
