Legend
Once Ravana, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, did
penance to bring the Lord to Lanka. Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva
appeared in front of Ravana and promised him that he will come with Ravana in
the form of Shiva Lingam. But at the same time the Shiva also mentioned that if
Ravana ever had to keep that Lingam anywhere in the midway, he will never be
able to take it to Lanka. The Gods were worried as Lord Shiva was about to
leave Kailash, so they prayed to Varuna Dev. Varuna, entered Ravana's stomach
from Kailash and soon Ravana was unable to restrain his call of nature. Lord
vishnu appeared in the form of an old priest in front of Ravana and promised
Ravana that he will hold the Lingam while he urinate. But as soon as Ravana
gave the Lingam to Vishnu, he put the lingam on the ground. When Ravana came
back, he was very annoyed to see the lingam on the ground. Ravana tried with
his best efforts to lift the lingam, but was unsuccessful. This is how the
Jyotirlingam of Baba Baidyanath Temple was consecrated.
