Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple Undavalli Caves, Undavalli Cave Temple of Anantha Padmanabha Swamy
Located in Undavalli of Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, Ananta Padmanabha Swamy Temple Undavalli Caves is a four-storeyed rock cut cave temple dedicated to Lord Siva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. Dating back to 6th -7th century A.D, the temple is one of the centrally protected monuments of national importance. The first floor of the temple houses the carved images of Lord Vishnu, Lord Siva and Lord Brahma on the rocks. The second floor houses a 20 ft long idol of Anantha Padmanabha Swamy in the recumbent posture sculptured out of a single rock. The third floor has unfinished triple shrines of Vishnu, Siva and Brahma.
Legend
According to the legends, Madhava Reddy who ruled this
region as a subordinate under the Reddies of Kondaveedu gifted the caves to build
the temple of Anantha Swamy. It is also believed that these caves were used by
the Buddhist monks as their rest houses. Some of the other shrines in the cave
are dedicated to Lord Brahma and Shiva.
Architecture
The caves of Undavalli provides the finest example of the
rock cut architecture of the Buddhists in India. Carved out of solid sandstone
on a hillside in the 4th to 5th centuries AD, Ananta Padmanabha Swamy Temple
has four stories with a huge recreated statue of Vishnu in a reclining posture,
sculpted from a single block of granite inside the second floor. The first floor of the temple houses the
carved images of Lord Vishnu, Lord Siva and Lord Brahma on the rocks. The third floor has unfinished triple shrines
of Vishnu, Siva and Brahma.
