Built by Western Chalukyas in the 11th century, Shri Shambhulingeshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati is located at Kundgol in the Dharwad District of Karnataka.

Architecture

The temple is a typical Kadamba style construction. This east facing temple has 3 entrances; east, south and north. 64 lathe turned and polished pillars with rich designs hold up the temple's roof. No two pillars are same in decoration.It is built with highly polished stones, which are dovetailed into one another. The carvings and images on the pillars are well cut. On the side of the door steps of the temple, there is a carvings of the Lion face with a long scroll issuing from its mouth. The outside of the temple is covered with sculptures of various gods in small mantapas and a continuous row of mini shikharas below.

Culture 

Kundgol is the birthplace of Rambhau Kundgolkar (popular as Pandit Sawai Gandharva), a well known Hindustani musician. Dharwad's exquisite culture of Hindustani classical music have a historical background to huge temples built in 11th and 12th centuries.
