Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple

Situated in Thrissur, Kerala, Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple is one of the famous temples in Kerala dedicated to Lord Krishna. Earlier, the temple was situated in a rural village called Edakkalathoor, located 20 Kms away in the north west direction of Trichur Town. Goddess Bhagavathy is consecrated in a shrine just on the left of Lord Krishna and worshipped with equal ardour. The temple is one of the two rival groups participating in the Thrissur Pooram, which is the biggest local festival in Kerala.

Legend

According to the legends, the local administrator of the area was a respected gentleman called Moose. In around Sixteenth century, a girl belonging to the Moose family fell in love with a young man of another religious sect and it created a lot of tension and conflicts arose among the village people. Foreseeing the communal riot, some villagers decided to save the idols of the temple from being destroyed and took the idol and went to Thrissur seeking help from the "Kandanathu Mana" (also renowned as Kachanappilli Mana). The childless couples residing there took the idol and considered it as their kid and consecrated the idol in a hall within their house premises. The couples were worshippers of Kodungaloor Bhagavathi (Goddess Devi in Kodungaloor temple). They had the spirit of the Devi consecrated onto a pillar of nadumuttam (a vacant place surrounded by rooms called "nalukettu") when the Devi accompanied the Namboodiri on the Olakkuda (umbrella made of palm leaves) while returning from the temple. As per the astrologers advise Namboodiri consecrated Bhagavathi on the left side of the sanctum of Lord Krishna. Later they transferred the ownership of the Temple to the public as they had no children.
