Located in the pilgrimage town of Nanjangud, Karnataka, Srikanteshwara Temple is a famous and ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is also called as Nanjundeshwara Temple. Here, Lord Shiva is worshipped as Srikanteshwara Swami, also known as Nanjundeshwara. Nanjangud is
also known as "Dakshina Kashi". The Srikanteshwara temple is the biggest temple in Karnataka. The temple has 3 main deities, Lord Nanjundeshwara, Goddess Parvathi (wife of Lord Shiva) and Lord Vishnu with Sridevi and Bhudevi.

Legend

According to the legends, it is believed that sage Gauthama stayed here for some time and has installed a Shiva Linga, the idol of Lord Shiva. It is believed that Sage Parashurama did great penance here for the grace of Srikanteshwara to expiate himself of the sin of beheading his mother Renuka.

Architecture

Srikanteshwara Temple is the biggest temple in Karnataka and measures 385 feet by 160 feet, with a total area of 50,000 square feet. The Mahadvara (main entrance) is seven - storey high and is decorated with seven gold plated Kalasas that add a further three meters to its loftiness flanked by two horns. The outer walls of the temple are about 12 feet high. A spacious courtyard (Prakara) welcomes hundreds of pilgrims to the divine abode of Shiva. There are decorative pillars in the Srikanteshwara Temple.

city of Mysore. The town is famous for Srikanteshwara Temple. Nanjangud is also called as "Dakshina Kashi" (southern Kashi).
