Temple

Situated in Srirangapatina, in the Mandya district, Karnataka, Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is a famous temple dedicated to Lord  Ranganatha ( a manifestation of Lord Vishnu). It is one of the Pancharanga Kshetrams (Pancha-five, ranga-Ranganatha, Kshetram-sites ) along the river Kaveri f in Southern India. Here, the deity is also known as Adi Ranga (First Ranga), as Srirangapatna is the first temple starting from upstream. At present, the temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Legend

According to the legends, once River Cauvery performed penance with prayer to Lord Ranganatha. Pleased with her penance, Lord Ranganatha appeared in front of Cauvery and gave her three benedictions, that the river would have greater sacredness than the Ganges, the place Srirangapatna would became a place of pilgrimage and the Lord Ranganatha would settle himself there. As per the benedictions,
Lord Ranganatha was worshiped by the Cauvery and he took the form of an idol resting on shree adishesha.

Architecture

The temple has a navaranga mandapam which surrounds the sanctum sanctorum. The principal deity is Sri Ranganatha in the sleeping posture with the Adi Shesha, the serpent with seven heads. Goddess Lakshmi is at Lord Ranganatha's foot. Goddess Ranganayaki is the principal goddess of this beautiful temple. The temple has four strong pillars with twenty four beautifully sculpted Vishnu forms.

Special Rituals

Every year in the pushya month Makara Sankranthi Brahmotsava is celebrated at the temple. On the sixth auspicious day of Brahmotsava on account of Uttarayana (Auspicious Day) the Vaikunta door of the temple will be kept open for the devotees.  On this auspicious day in the morning, Shri Ranganatha Swamy will be fully decorated with butter and in the night the God will be dressed with Vaikuntamudi crown.More than 50000 devotees will visit the temple on this day.
