Sri Pydithalli Ammavaru Temple

Andhra Pradesh, Vizianagaram, Amaravathi

Located in the heart of Vizianagaram city, Andhra Pradesh, Sri Pydithalli Ammavaru (also known as Pydimamba) is a famous temple dedicated to Pydithalli Ammavaru (Grama Devata). The temple dates back to 18th century and was constructed after completion of the Bobbili battle. The sculpture of the Goddess was found on Vijayadasimi day several years ago in the year 1757 after the battle.

Legend

According to the legends, the Goddess Pydimamba belonged to the Gajapati Dynasty and was the sister of king Vijaya Rama Raju. During the year 1756, the king of Vizianagaram had a constant rivalry with the king of Bobbili which led to the Bobbili Battle. During that battle the wife and the sister Pydimamba, of king Vijaya Rama Raju who were suffering from Masuchi (a disease), tried to convince him to avoid war. While performing a pooja, Pydimamba came to know that his brother was in trouble and she tried to convey a message to him through a soldier named Patiwada Appala Naidu. However, the king was killed in the battle. After hearing about the death of her brother, Pydimamba fainted and fell ill and before her death she told that her soul would join goddess Durga. Soon, she passed away and the next Tuesday villagers found an idol of her at the western part of Pedda Cheruvu (lake), where the temple is constructed.

Architecture

The temple belongs to 18th century of Vizianagaram dynasty. The temple internal walls and mandapa are designed with hindu gods and goddesses idols. The temple flooring is made of hard rock stone.
