Located at outside of the Purna Qila (Old Fort) opposite Pragati Maidan, Bhairon Temple or Kilkaari Baba Bhairav Naath Mandir is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Kala Bhairava, a fierce incarnation of Lord Shiva. Believed to be built by Pandavas, Bheem used to worship in this temple and attainded Siddhis. The temple lies in the backyard of Purana Qila, the castle of the Pandavas. There are two wings in the temple - one called as 'Doodhiya Bhairava Temple' where milk is offered & the other ‘Kilkari Bhairava Temple’ where alcohol is offered.

Legend

According to the temple legends, once the Goddess Vaishno entered a cave keeping 'Veer-Langur' to guard the entrance and instructed to not allow anyone inside. When Lord Bhairav tried to enter the cave, Goddess took the form of 'Chandi' and killed him. The head separated from body fell to the place now called Bhairav Ghati where the temple has been constructed. Later, Goddess took pity on Bhairav and gave him a boon of liberation. Later, Bheem established the idol of Bhairav in this temple only having the head with two big blue eyes along with a trident in hand.

Architecture

Built in North Indian style of architecture, Marble is used extensively in the interiors of this temple. All the idols found in this temple are constructed in marble. The idol of Lord Bhairav, have only the face with two big blue eyes and a trident.
