Sri Chengalamma Temple

Andhra Pradesh, Nellore, Amaravathi

Situated in the village of Sullurpeta, Sri Chengalamma Temple is a famous temple dedicated to Goddess Chengalamma Parameswari. The temple is situated on the banks of the Kanlangi river. The goddess is also referred to as Goddess Tenkali by people. The temple is founded during the fourth and fifth centuries.

Legend

According to the legends, the idol of the Chengalamma was found in the nearby river by few boys who were swimming and they informed the villagers. However, the villagers cannot move the idol. Next day, they noticed that the idol is facing towards south and was standing straight. They were able to lift the idol only after performing the pooja and brought it to the current location. At first, the goddess was called as Tenkali (Dakshina Kali). Later, it was changed to Chengali and then to the current name Chengalamma.

Architecture

The temple walls are sculpted with gods and goddesses idols in different forms. The top of the main mandapam is sculpted with different images and is visible to everyone. The temple is built on hard sand stone.
