Andalkumayan Perumal Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Aadanoor, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the "Divya Desams", the 108 temples of Vishnu revered by the 12 poet saints, or Alwars. It is located in Olaipadi, a small village, 7 km away from Kumbakonam and 2 km from Swamimalai. Sri Aandu Alakkum Ayan Perumal temple is also known as Bhargava Kshetram. The lord who is suppose to be the Paramaathma, resides (Urayum) on all of the hearts, which is considered as the place of stay of him. He is seeing all the activities of Jeevaathma by going in depth to call to cell. As the seva of this God, he holds of the leaf (Oolai Chuvadi) and a writing instrument, he calculates the good and bad activities of all the Jeevathmaas and based on the activities, he is ruling the Jeevathmaas. Because of this reason this Emperumal is called as 'Aandu Alakkum Ayan', as he keeps Marakkal, measuring instrument which is used as the measuring tool for measuring the good and bad activities. His right hand is the hand which serves all the necessary things needed for the world (Padi alakkum Kai(hand)) and left hand for writing.

Legend

There are many legends associated with Andalkumayan Perumal Temple. According to one  legend, Kamadhenu, a divine goddess came ahead of Goddess Lakshmi from Parkadal. Hence Kamadhenu felt that she should be honored by everyone first and foremost ahead of Lakshmi Devi.  Lord Paranthaman decided to teach her a lesson and gave Marakkal ( In olden days in Tamilnadu food grains were used to be measured  in a Cylindrical shaped container made of wood, brass, iron etc ommonly called as Padi ) and asked to fill with all the Ayshwaryam she was having. Kamadhenu was failed to fill because of her envy, where as Lord Lakshmi Devi filled the Marakkal by praying Lord Vishnu and just with One Leaf of Thulasi. Kamadhenu learnt a lesson, surrendered herself to Lord Vishnu and started a penance. Hence this place is being worshipped as Aadhanoor - Aa Dhan Oor. Aa means Cow, Kamadhenu. Dhan means Penance and Oor means a Residing Place.

This temple is part of the famous Kumbakonam Divyadesam Yatra.

Architecture

Sri Andalakkum Aiyan temple is built in Dravidian Architecture style. The temple has a small shrine with Vimanam. This temple has a three-tiered structured gopuram(temple tower).Perumal blesses the devotees in a reclining posture. The deities being carved out of Salagramam stone is a speciality here. The Vimana above the sanctum is called Pranava Vimanam. The temple is in between Cauvery and Kollidam rivers. The Lord has a Marakkal (a measuring tool) under His head, Olai Chuvadi (palm leaf) and an Ezhuthaani (writing instrument) in His left hand.

The temple is open from 7.00 AM to 12.30 PM and from 4.00 PM to 8.00 PM.

Darsan Dresscode

Male devotees have been advised to wear dhoti, shirt, pyjama or pant and shirt while women and girls should wear saris or churidhar or 'pavadai' with half-sari. Devotees wearing lungi, bermudas, jeans and tight-leggings would not be allowed.

Temple Rituals

According to our belief and scriptures, there are two pillars in the Paramapata, Abode of Lord Vishnu. Jeevas would be relieved of their sins if they embrace these pillars while going up. There are two such pillars in this temple in the Arthamandapa. Devotees use to circumambulate the pillars in even numbers and worship the feet and head of Lord to attain salvation. Those awaiting marriage also worship this way for realizing their wish.

Special Rituals

This temple is said to be a Parihara Sthalam for: avoiding fire accidents in the house, factories and buildings; to prevent from Electrical hazards and electrical shocks.
People who have 'Sevvai Dhosham' in their horoscope may get delays in getting married and difficult in selection of their partners. It is believed if such people visit this temple and do prayers to Lord Vishnu and Thayar with a sari and Ghee Dheepam, their prosperity will be better.
