Sita Mai Temple

An ancient shrine situated in a small village in the Karnal district of Haryana and devoted to Goddess Sita is the Sitamai temple. This is one of the few temples solely dedicated to Sita. The temple was destructed by Mughal invaders and the bricks thrown into a tank. The original bricks were recovered and late put together by the people.

Legend

Sita is described as the daughter of the earth. After her sons grew up and united with their father, Sita returned to her mother, the Earth's womb, as a testimony of her purity. The temple is believed to be built at the spot where Mother Earth split open, in answer to Sita's appeal and allowed her to return back.

Architecture

The temple is made of bricks and has elaborate ornamentation covering the whole shrine. It has a dome shaped shikhara on the top. The sanctum has the image of Goddess Sita in standing position.The walls of the sanctum are filled with paintings depicting various stories from the Ramayana

Culture

Karnal is believed to have been the "Ang Raaj" given to Karna by Duryodhana in Mahabharata. This "Ang Raaj" was later developed by Karna and came to be known as Karnal.
