Temple

In the village of Nathdwara, stands the temple of Shrinathji, the form of the Lord Krishna when he lifted the Govardhan hill, with one arm raised. Shrinathji Temple is also known as 'Haveli of Shrinathji'. The temple was built by Goswami priests in 1672. Shrinathji is seen as Thakorji or Master of the House and Seva (service) is offered rather than worship.

Legend

The idol of the Lord Krishna is believed to have moved during the late 17th century to Nathdwara from Govardhan. When the idol reached the particular spot, the wheels of bullock cart in which the idol was being transported sank in mud and could not be moved.The priests realising that the Lord chose that place to reside built the temple with the guidance of then Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar

Architecture

The temple has been contracted along the lines of the mansion or haveli of Nanda Maharaj in Vrindavan. There is a kalasha on the shikhara at the top of the temple, on which seven flags are flown along with the Sudarshana Chakra. The seven flags represent the 7 'houses' of Pushti Marg or Vallabh Sampradaya. Like a regular household it has a chariot, Doodhghar, Paanghar, Mishrighar, Pedaghar, Phoolghar, Gahnaghar, a kitchen, a treasury, a stable for horses, a drawing room, a gold and silver grinding wheel. The image is in a single black marble, where the lord is revealed with his left hand raised and the right hand made into a fist resting at the waist, depicting his form when he lifted the Govardhan mountain.
