The Shri Hanuman / Anjaneya Thakur Temple was built by King Garib Niwaj in 1725 AD. Established in the Mahabali Forests by the banks of the Imphal River, the century-old monument enshrines a beautifully sculpted Hanuman /Anjaneya idol that was cut out of a slab rock.The temple was the epicenter from where the Ramanandi cult of Hinduism spread in Manipur. After the death of king Garib Niwaj, the cult also was abolished from Manipur. This is why the historical temple has a legendary significance in Manipur.

Architecture

Shree Hanuman Thakur temple enshrines a beautifully sculpted Hanuman idol cut out of a slab of rock. The temple was built in the hut-type Bengal style. The sanctum cube is a dome shaped hemi-spherical structure that rises up to the roof in a rectangular shape. Lotus motifs carved on stone are placed on the roof top and at the crown a Kalash is placed. The Kalash holds the Nilchakra. The whole structure is made of brick and later on cemented with plaster throughout the edifice to keep it strong and long lasting.

Special Rituals

Hanuman /  Anjaneya Jayanti is the most auspicious festival observed in the temple. The program starts with the Holy Bathing of Hanuman ji after which, the idol is offered new clothes and vermillion tilak followed by aarti. Laddus as prasad is served to devotees.
