Goa, North Goa, Panjim

Situated in Goa, Shri Shantadurga Temple is a famous Temple dedicated to Shantadurga, the goddess who mediates between Vishnu and Shiva. The current structure of Shanta Durga Temple was constructed during the reign of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shahu of Satara in 1738. The original place of Shree Shantadurga devi temple was at Keloshi. From there, the Devi was shifted to Kavlem during the rule of Portuguese government.
Legend
According to the legends, once a battle for supremacy ensued between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The battle turned more and more fierce. Lord Brahma prayed to Goddess Parvati to intervene. Parvati stopped the fight in the form of Shanta durga. Both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva could be seen in the hands of Shanta durga at the temple. The two serpents in the goddess hands, represent Vishnu and Shiva.
Architecture
The Shanta durga Temple is built in Indo-Portuguese architectural style. It has pyramidal shaped Shikaras rising on the roofs of the facade and the sabhamandap. Pillars are made of Kashmir stone and the temple is extraordinary in the sense that one might confuse it for a church at first sight.
