Sheetla Mata Mandir

Haryana, Gurugram, Chandigarh

The Sheetla Mata temple is dedicated to the wife of Guru Dronacharya, Kirpai. Kirpai, devoted herself to look after the sick children, specially those suffering from the smallpox. She was honoured as Mata Sheetla or Mata Masani, i.e. 'the goddess of smallpox. The villagers built a temple at Keshiopur which was later shifted to Gurugram near the site of the ashram of her husband. The current temple was built in the 18th century by the Jat king Jawahar Singh of Bharatpur, in memory of his victory over the Mughals.

Legend

The temples is believed to have been build centuries ago by a fief holder named Chaudhri Singh Ram  alias Singha. Singha was a an ardent devotee who spent most of his time in singing Bhajans and worshipping the Goddess. Sheetala Devi appeared in his dream and expressed her desire to leave Keshopur and come to Gurgaon. He made a small shrine for the Goddess and installed the goddess. This structure later on became the Sheetala Devi temple.  The residents of Keshopur however continued to dispute the claims of the people of Gurgaon. This dispute was laid to rest during the time of Begum Samru, the Governor of Jharsa under the Mughals. Her child who had smallpox was cured after worshipping the goddess Masani at Gurgaon. Devotees started to believe  that the goddess had begun to live at village Gurgaon.
