Pookulangara Bhagavathy Temple

Pookulangara Bhagawathy Temple is an ancient hindu temple located at Kunissery in Palakkad district. The temple belonged to Kunissery Nayars. But it was later taken over by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Board.

Legend

According to the legends, once the Zamorin King invaded Kunissery and all the male members of the village were killed in the battle. The helpless womenfolk had prayed to Bhagawathy and Bhagawathy saved her 'children' from disgrace and fought the battle herself. On learning about the powerful act of Bhagawathy, the King himself had surrendered before Bhagawathy.

Architecture

Pookulangara Bhagavathy Temple structure includes sreekovil with mukha mandapam, sub-shrines, namaskara mandapam, chuttambalam with agramandapam. Navagrahas are carved on the ceiling of the agramandapam.

Pookulangara Bhagavathy Temple is open from 5 AM to 11 AM and from 5 PM to 7:45 PM.

On Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays and on the first day of all Malayalam months, the temple will be open from 4:30 AM to 12.00 PM and on Thiruvathira day of Meenam month the temple will open at 4 PM. During Kummatti day, the temple remains open all through the night.

Culture

Palakkad has mainly paddy cultivation as the main occupation of the people and the district is called the 'Rice Bowl' of Kerala. The social and cultural customs of the people are, therefore, one way or other, connected with agriculture.

Temple Rituals

The main idol is of Goddess Bhagavathi with the sankalpa of Goddess Durga in a mild nature. The darusilpa idol is in sitting pose with eight arms holding conch, chakra, mace, lotus, trident, bow, arrow and rope.
