Temple

Situated on the Brahmaputra plateau in the lower reaches of the Lohit River and 21 km north of Tezu in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh, Parshuram Kund is a Hindu pilgrimage centre dedicated to Sage Parshuram, sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu. The Parashuram Kund as established by the sadhu was in existence till 1950 and the kund was completely covered by the earthquake that shook the whole of the North-East. A very strong current is now flowing over the original site of the kund but massive boulders have in a mysterious way embedded themselves in a circular formation in the river bed thus forming another kund in place of the old.

Legend

According to the legends, Sage Parshuram killed his mother Renuka with an axe at the behest of his father Saint Jamadagni. The axe got stuck to his hands after that incident and he visited all sacred places for atonement; however, all was in vain. Then Sage Parshuram came to the Kund where he took a dip and the axe came free and fell down. The spot where the axe fell, became the source of Lohit River. Since then, the Kund has been known as the Parshuram Kund.

Architecture

Parashuram Kund is a small temple pilgrim complex. Behind the temple premises, there are idols depicting the legendary story of parshurama killing his mother. The small temple have Lord Vishnu and Parashurama idols inside the temple premises.

There are no specific timings to visit the lake and you can reach the place as per your convenience. Makarsankranti day which normally falls in Mid-January every year, an endless stream of pilgrims come to take a dip in the kund in spite of the biting cold wind. At midnight, the auspicious ceremony of Makarsankranti begins and devotees start bathing in the kund.
