Paradevatha Temple

Paradevatha Temple is datable back to the Thirteenth Century. The temple was under the management of Kadamattath Kovilakam till 1960, when the royal family found it hard to manage the affairs. So it was handed over to Katameri Kshetra Samrakshna Samithi.

Legend

The head of Vanneri tharavad was once passing along the area, when he spotted a dilapidated temple. Though the temple was in ruins he felt the divine presence and thought of renovating the temple. But then he forgot about it and continued his journey. On reaching home, he had many misfortunes and the prasna or astrologer told him that the divine presence he felt is now with him and would leave him only if he built a proper temple for it. So he built the Paradevatha Temple where he felt the divine presence.

Architecture

Paradevatha Temple complex spread over an acre has got sreekovil, pattupura, chuttambalam, nitumpura, sub-shrines and agrasaala. The adisthanam of the sreekovil has ouldings of padukam, jagathi, kumudam, galam and gala-pati.

Paradevatha Temple is open from 5:30 AM to 9:30 AM and from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM.

The initial rites of the temple were done by Kaatumadom Namboodiri. Two idols were installed on the same peetham - that of Sree Vairajathan (Paradevatha) with sankalpa of Lord Siva and Goddess Bhagavathy, who is locally known as Thampuratti with the sankalpa of Goddess Parvathy.

Culture

Kozhikode has made substantial contribution to the cutlure of the land. The district is famous for folk songs or ballads known as Vadakkan Pattukal. The most popular songs celebrate the exploits of Thacholi Othenan and Unniyarcha. Kozhikode also has a strong associations with ghazals and football.

Temple Rituals

Both the idols at Paradevatha Temple are made of pancha-loha (five alloys) and installed on a single peetham. The idol of Vairajathan is in standing pose with two arms having a sword in right hand and shield in the left. Goddess idol is seated on a horse with a sword in right hand and mirror in the left.
