Situated in Mokshagundam, a small village in Giddalur Taluk of Andhra Pradesh, Mukteswara Swamy temple is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that the Shiva Linga was installed by Sage Vasista. The two documents retrieved from the temple premises of the years 1524 AD and 1691 AD dates to Salivahana dynasty.

Legend

According to the legends, Parasurama killed his mother Renuka, upon the orders of his father, Sage Jamadagni. To relieve himself from the sin of killing his mother, Parasurama took bath here in this temple tanks and performed Puja to the Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva relieved Parasurama from the committed Sin and hence the place got the name Mukteswaram. It is also believed that Lord Rama reached Mokshagundam one year after his father Dasarath's death and performed the last rites here.

Architecture

The main gopuram and internal sanctum of the temple are built with sand rock stone. The internal walls of the temple was sculpted with the images of gods and animals.
