Maya Devi Temple

Along with the shrines of Mansa devi and Chandi devi, the temple of Maya devi completes the trinity of Siddhapeetha at Haridwar where the wishes of the devotees is believed to be fulfilled. Haridwar was previously known as Mayapuri in honour of the deity of Mayadevi. The temple is believed to have been built in the 11th century and is one of the oldest temples in  Haridwar.

Legend

Mythology believes the Maya devi temple as one of the Shaktipeethas. When Lord Shiva's wrath at the death of his wife Sati manifested as the Tandava which would destroy the Universe, Lord Vishnu's Sudarshan chakra cut her corpse into pieces which scattered around the subcontinent.  It is believed that the Goddess'  navel and heart fell where the temple of Maya devi stands today.

This Temple is part of famous Saptapuri Yatra , Haridwar Rishikesh Yatra.and Maha Kumb Mela.

Architecture

The temple is one of the ancient temples in the holy city of Haridwar. The entrance to the temple is small and is situated among small buildings. But inside the small shrine is the three-headed and four-armed deity who is believed to be an incarnation of Shakti. The inner shrine consists of idols of goddesses Maya in the centre, Kali on the left, Kamakhya on the right.

Maya DeviTemple timings : 6.00AM to 8.00PM   
Though generally not crowded, the temple witness a large number of devotees during Navratri and Kumbmela. The famed Har Ki Pauri is very close to the shrine of Maya devi.

Culture

Haridwar is famous for its many temples, religious occurrences and spirituality. It is one of the seven holiest places of Hindus and one of the four places where Kumbamela is conducted. During the Kumbh Mela, millions of pilgrims, devotees, and tourists congregate in Haridwar to perform ritualistic bathing on the banks of the river Ganga.

Temple Rituals

The priests perform puja with the offerings bought by the devotees and give prasad. Regular pujas are also conducted in the Maya Devi temple.
