Temple

Located in Sagar, Karnataka, the Marikamba Temple is a hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Parvathi. Here, Goddess is worshipped in the form of Goddess Marikamba. Marikamba temple, also called Doddamma Temple was built during the 16th century during the reign of Venkatappa Nayak, ruler of the Keladi and Ikkeri kingdom. Goddess Marikamba was the family deity of the Nayaka dynasty.

Legend

According to the legends, once Saint Adi Shankaracharya visited Sagar. During his stay in the town, Goddess Marikamba appeared in his dream and told him to establish a temple for the Goddess at this place. Next day, Saint Adi Shankaracharya consecrated the foot prints of the goddess at the outer limits of the city. During this period (1596), Kadamba, Chalukya and Hoysala dynasties were at war with each other. At this time, Venkatappa Nayaka, ruler of the Keladi and Ikkeri kingdom, adopted Goddess Marikamba as his family Goddess, seeking her blessings to attain victory in the battle. After he won the battle, he shifted the footprints of the goddess from the outskirts to a central location in the city and built a temple to house the footprints.

Temple Rituals

The temple is open from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Special Rituals

Every three years, in the month of February, Marikamba Jathra (fair), a 10 day fair is held at the temple. On this occasion, a 16 feet high colourfully decorated chariot carrying the image of the idol is taken out on a procession.
