Malayalapuzha Devi Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. The temple is situated at  Malayalappuzha in Pathanamthitta, Kerala. The temple is built more than 1000 years ago. In this temple, Goddes is worshipped in a ferocious form soon after the killing of the demon, Darika.

Legend

Once upon a time, two people belonging to the Namboothiri caste were meditating at Mookambika temple. They had an idol of Bhadrakali with them. They received an oracle from Bhadrakali that the idol will have her perpetual presence. The Namboothiris continued their pilgrimage with the idol in their possession. When they became old, Bhadrakali appeared before them and advised them that Malayalappuzha was the ideal place to erect the idol. Following her advice, the Namboothiris reached Malayappuzha and erected the idol.

Architecture

Malayalapuzha Devi Temple features beautiful wall paintings and artistic stone carvings. The temple features a unique statue of Goddess Parvati feeding baby Ganapathy on her lap. An idol of Veera Bhadra can be seen on the entry to the sanctum. Sub deities in the temple are Brahma Rakshas, Nagaraja and a swayambu Shiva Linga.

The Malayalapuzha Devi Temple, built more than 1000 years ago, enshrines the fierce form of Mother Goddess soon after the killing of the demon, Darika. The Goddess is known as Malayalapuzha Amma with devotion and the main idol is made from Katu Sarkara Yogam (concentrated jaggery) and is 5.5 feet high and has eight hands. Malayalapuzha Devi is believed to grant boons for extending prosperity to all the devotees. The devi is also known as Goddess Idathattil Bhagwathi.

Special Rituals

There is another very peculiar belief in the Malayalapuzha Devi Temple. It is believed that the soul of the devotees of the Goddess , after death comes and stays in the temple. So their sons/daughters come to the temple along with a piece of sandalwood packed in a red silk, make the soul enter that and take it out . This is called Chavirakkal (removal of death)
