Legend

Many legends and Jatakas revolve around Bodh Gaya. The spot at which the tree is located, is believed to be the navel of the Earth. The Bodhi Tree is believed to have sprang up as Gautam Buddha was born.

Architecture

Mahabodhi Temple is constructed of brick and is an example of architecture during the Gupta Period. The central tower is surrounded by four smaller towers, constructed in the same style. The Mahabodhi Temple is surrounded on all four sides by stone railings, about two metres high. In 2013, the upper portion of the temple was gilded with gold gifted by the king of Thailand and the devotees there.
