Maha Devi Tirth Temple
Himachal Prades, Kullu, Shimla

Located in the beautiful Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh, right by the river Beas, Mahadevi Tirth temple is a temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati. The temple is also called as Vaishno Devi temple. It was built in 1966. The foundation of the tirth was laid down by Swami Sewak Das ji who was an ardent devotee of the Goddess.
Legend
The story of the origin of the temple is rooted in the childhood of Sri Sri Maharaj ji. Sri Sri Maharaj ji yearned for the lap of the holy Mother and so Sri Maharaj ji reached Kullu in 1962, but disappointed, he decided to move ahead and through Lahole / Chamba he reached Mata Vaishnu Devi shrine in Jammmu. There, in his trance, the Holy Mother asked him to go to the place, where he had come from. Obeying the divine orders - Shri Maharaj ji came back to Kullu in 1963 and found the cave. Maharaj ji was told that this was the very cave where the Mother sat in penance to win over Lord Shiva.
Architecture
The main temple of Shakti is inside a cave, that is believed to be centuries old. Remaining part of the temple represents modern architecture and has witnessed many renovations. The temple is known more for its spiritual significance than for its architectural splendour. Mahadevi tirth temple is just about 5 kms from Kullu and also has a handi crafts center from where one could buy memorabilia of Mahadevi Tirth.
