Maa Chamunda Temple, Jodhpur

Located in the southern part of Mehrangarh fort, is the temple dedicated to the Ishta devi of royal family, the Chamunda Mata temple. Founder of Jodhpur city, Rao Jodha brought the idol of his favourite goddess from old capital of Mandore in 1460. He installed Chamunda Devi idol in the Mehrangarh Fort and it is worshipped even today by both royals and the Jodhpur's citizens. A stampede occurred on 30 September 2008, at the temple, in which 249 people were killed and more than 400 injured.

Legend

The Chamunda Mataji temple in Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur, was established in 1460 after the idol of the goddess Chamunda was moved from the old capital of Mandore by the then-ruler Jodha of Mandore.

Architecture

The shrine situated inside the Mehrangarh fort, is serenely beautiful with its white dome, exquisitely carved ceiling and pillars. Red flags adorn the top of the shrine. In the sanctum, is the deity of Goddess Chamunda adorned with flowers in front of red cloth backdrop. Brass belles hang in from of the sanctum.
