Temple

Located in Idukki, Kolani Sree Krishna Temple is a famous temple in Kerala dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is believed that the temple was built during the 11th century.

Legend

The legend of the Kolani Sree Krishna Temple is related to the exile of Pandavas. According to the legend, the brothers installed five temples dedicated to Lord Krishna at Thodupuzha, Kolani, Muttam, Idavetti and Perumbilichira. Among these, the three facing east were consecrated by Yudhishtira, Bheema and Arjuna and the remaining two facing west were by Nakula and Sahadeva.

Architecture

The Kolani Sree Krishna Temple structure comprises of Sreekovil, sub-shrines, namaskara mandapam, chuttambalam with agra-mandapam, dhwajam or flagpost and ottupura. There is an Aanakottil built in front of the temple with eight pillars.

The temple is open from 6 AM to 11:30 AM, and from 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM.
A Keda-vilakku (a lamp that is never put out) is kept in front of the deity.

Culture

In the olden times people from other parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu migrated to Idukki and so Idukki district is said to have a mixed culture. A large tribal population is settled in Idukki and there are more than 200 tribal clans here. The main inhabitants of this place are the scheduled tribes which include Malayarayan, Mannan, Oorali, Paliyan, Malapandaram, Malayan etc. Out of all the tribes Malayarayan excel in socio economic and educational aspects.

Temple Rituals

The sila idol of Krishna is in standing pose. The idol has four arms holding conch, Sudarsana, mace and lotus. Idol of Lord Ganapati is in sitting pose, while Lord Siva and Brahmarakshas are in linga form.

Special Rituals

Utsava darsanam and prasada ottu during the annual festival are the special events at Kolani Sree Krishna Temple.
