Situated in Delhi, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is one of the most prominent Sikh gurdwara, or Sikh house of worship dedicated to the eighth Sikh Guru, Guru Har Krishan. In 1783, Sikh General Sardar Bhagel Singh, who supervised the construction of nine Sikh shrines in Delhi, built Gurudwara Bangla Sahib as a small shrine. Originally, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib was a bungalow belonging to the 17th century ruler, Raja Jai Singh, and was known as Jaisinghpura Palace. Guru Har Krishan resided here during his stay in Delhi in 1664. During the outbreak of smallpox and cholera epidemic, Guru Har Krishan helped the suffering by giving fresh water from the well at this house. Later, on March 30, 1664, Guru Har Krishan died after he too contracted the illness. Over the well, a small tank was constructed by Raja Jai Singh known as Sarovar and the water is now revered as having healing properties.

Legend

Architecture

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib has a notable golden dome with a sculpted bronze cupola and also a tall flagpole called as Nishan Sahib.The complex of Gurudwara is quite big and has a community kitchen hall, higher secondary school, charitable dispensary, library, Museum and a multilevel parking. Kitchen of the Gurudwara is commonly known as 'Langar' where food haven been served to the devotees throughout the day. The most attractive feature of the Gurudwara is the 'Sarovar' and the water of sarovar is now revered as having healing properties.
