Near the Lohgarh gate, in Amritsar, in the Indian state of Punjab set around a sarovar or lake known as Durgiana, stands the shrine of the same name dedicated to Goddess Durga.The original temple is believed to have existed since 16th century. However, the present shrine was constructed by Guru Harsai Mal Kapoor. The foundation stone of the temple was laid down by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya in 1924 on Ganga Dashmi day. The temple follows the architectural style of the famous Golden Temple. It is also known as the silver temple.
Legend
The original temple is believed to have existed since 16th century. It is believed that Sita devi used to perform puja to Goddess Durga in the premises of this shrine, during her last years in the ashram of Maharishi Valmiki. It is also the site where her sons, Luv and Kush spent their early childhood years.
