Doul Govinda Temple Guwahati

Situated on the northern banks of Brahmaputra, North Guwahati, Assam, Doul Govinda Temple is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. The first structure of the temple was erected more than 150 yeras ago. It was renovated again in 1966.

Legend

According to the legends, the idol of Lord Krishna which is consecrated at the sanctum sanctorum was found miraculously. Once it was rumoured that a milch cow, used to free herself and enter the quaint woods of the Sandhya-Jhar, located near the hamlet of JEKERIA in Rongia Subdivision of Kamrup district on every predawn. Everyday, the cow was stopped by a Birina grass bush upon which milk used to flow spontaneously from her udder. When the Sadaar Administrator Gargaram Barooah heard this event, he himself went there on elephant's back to witness the whole episode. He later on ordered to dig the place and the beautiful idol of Lord Krishna playing the flute was found. Later on, this idol was consecrated in the Deul Govinda Temple on the Holi utsav.

Architecture

The first temple of the Doul Govinda was built around 150 years back. But later on, the new temple is constructed in a modernized architecture at a beautiful location by the Brahmaputra River. Devotees are attracted by the well-maintained premises of the temple. Starting from the Bat-Chora or the main gate of the shrine, to the whole temple premise, looks wonderful because of the serene nature surrounding the place. Other significant constructions of the temple apart from the Sanctum Santorum are the Namghar, Monikut, devotees' rest house and the Doul.

Kamakshya Devi Temple, Umananda Temple, Nabagraha Temple, Vasistha Temple and Ashram, Bhuvaneswari Temple, Janardana Temple etc are some of the worth mentioning century-old Hindu shrines, enriched with legends, history, and architecture.

Temple Rituals

Daily at 7 a.m. Lord Krishna is bathed following the traditional rituals and practices. The pujarchana is offered daily along with serving the bhoga.In the evening, Arati is offered along with the beautiful devotional song performances.
