Legend
There are four major shrines of the Sixty-four Yogini, two in Odisha and two in Madhya Pradesh including this shrine in Jabalpur. A Yogini, in early Hinduism refered to the sacred feminine force and an embodiment of the Goddess herself. Historical evidence suggests that yoginis were those who practiced yoga, philosophy and tantric rituals. The yogini cult, was a secretive practice confined to few groups and had specific rituals and practices.
Architecture
The Chausat Yogini Temple is placed on a hill top and is built in North India temple architecture style. The complex of the temple consists of 64 shrines, one for each yogini. There is main shrine in the centre, where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are seen riding the Nandi bull. The idols of yoginis are exquisitely carved, with each one in a unique posture.
