Situated at Alappuzha district, Chakkulathukavu Bhagavathy Temple or Chakkulathu Kavu is a famous temple dedicated to Goddess Durga. It is one of the most popular temples in Kerala. The famous Chakkulathukavu Pongala takes place in the temple every year during the month of 'Vrischikam' (November/December).

Legend

According to the legends, once the demons Sumbha and Nishumbha did a severe penance to Lord Brahma. Pleased with their devotion, Brahma appeared before them and they asked a boon that only a woman can kill them. Brahma granted their wish. This made Sumbha and Nishumbha more powerful as no man can kill them. They conquered Indra and other Devas and ruled three worlds. The helpless Devas had to flee away and take shelter in remote jungles. Sage Narada felt pity about the condition of the Devas and he asked the Devas to invoke the Goddess Parvathy. Goddess Parvathy agreed to help the devas. The incarnation of Goddess Durga emerged out of Parvathy and defeated the demons in a ferocious battle. It is believed that the Goddess residing in Chakkulathukavu is an incarnation of this immensely powerful Goddess Durga.

Architecture

The Chakkulathu Kavu Temple is a master blend of traditional Kerala architecture with modern sensibilities. It has got tiled sloping roof, but with multiple stories, exhibiting the architectural excellence of Vaastu Sastra. The clean pond, used by the devotees, and the new look were done during the major renovation of the Chakkulathu Kavu Temple done recently.

Temple Rituals

The first Friday of every Malayalam month marks a spiritually significant day for the Chakkulathu Kavu Temple. Devotees who observe rigorous fasting and penance reach the shrine on this day. Special spiritual functions are also conducted on this day. The small idol of the God which is usually placed inside the sanctum sanctorum beside the main idol is carried in procession and brought to the specially arranged place for prayer. During the first Friday the devotees receive a unique type of medicine water famously known as "Oushadha Vellam". Drinking of this medicated water is proved to heal all types of ailments.

Special Rituals

A remarkable feat of the first Friday is the pledge that some devotees take against the habit of intoxication. The pledge against intoxication in front of the Mother goddess at Chakkulathu Kavu Temple is perhaps the one and the only instance of its kind across temples of India.
