The main temple of the Bhoramdeo temple complex is built in stone. The temple complex is built at the foot of the thickly forested scenic backdrop of the Maikal range of hills, in the Daksina Kosala region, which is in the present day Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The temple was constructed between 10th-12th century A.D. by King Ramchandra of the Nag Dynasty. The temple is divided into two parts namely Ishtika (brick), the main temple, and the completely stone-carved area. The main shrine is built in front of a calm and serene lake, upon a five feet high extensive podium including a mandap, an antral and the garbha griha. Oriented towards the east, the Bhoramdeo Temple has three openings except for one facing towards the west. The mandap of the shrine is in square shape and has four pillars in the middle and the rest are in borders, linked with lofty roofs. Sculpted on the exterior and interior walls of the temple are the bass reliefs in the entablature part, of elephants, mythical figures and sensuous sculptures; the sensuous figures on the exterior walls represent the Kama Sutra, the erotic postures which reflects the then prevailing social, cultural, architectural and religious ethos in the region. These sculptures are crafted in three tiers on the exterior face of the temple up to the pinnacle, and are housed in niches.
