Temple

The ancient temple of Ambika Devi with its beautiful architecture and exquisite carvings is located in a cleft of rocks in the village of Jagat in Rajasthan. Here the goddess is worshipped as 'shakthi', the primary source of energy. It is believed that this temple was built in about 960 AD. From the inscription on the pillars of the temple it can be concluded that it was renovated in the 11th century by Allat, earstwhile ruler of Mewar. The shrine is known as the 'Khajuraho of Rajasthan', an ode to its intricate etchings, exotic sculptures and ornamented panels.

Legend

Some legends consider the Ambika devi temple as a Shakthipeeth, one of the revered places where the body parts of Sati devi fell.

Architecture

Architecturally, the temple with a pentagonal structure, is a sight to behold, its intricate and extraordinary artisanship giving it the name 'Khajuraho of Rajasthan'. The doorway of the temple is beautifully carved and the ceiling panel of the 'mandap' is decorated with multi-lobed motifs. The shrine comprises an elevated altar where the image of the Goddess is placed. The outstanding architecture of the temple comprises of various sculptures of Gods, Goddesses and scenes from the mythological stories.
