Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple

Located in Ambalappuzha, Alapuzha district, Kerala, Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple is one of the famous temples in Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Here, Lord Krishna is worshiped in the form Parthasarathy. Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple is directly associated to the Guruvayoor Sree Krishna Temple. The idol of Lord Krishna from the Guruvayoor Temple was brought to the Ambalappuzha Temple for safe keeping, during the raids of Tipu Sultan in 1789.

Legend

According to the legends, one day Saint Vilwamangalam Swamiyar and Pooradam Thirunal Thampuran was voyaging on the backwaters when the Saint heard a melodious music of a flute. Swamiyar, being an ardent devotee of Shree Krishna had a vision that the Lord was playing the flute up on a Peepal Tree. The overwhelmed Pooradam Thirunal Thampuran decided to build a temple in that place after he came to know about the vision of Saint Vilwamangalam Swamiyar. This temple later on came to be known as Ambalapuzha Temple, where Lord Shree Krishna is worshiped in the form of Chariot driver In Mahabharata, Shree Krishna became the chariot driver of the third Pandava Arjun and given him the complete "margadarshan" during the fight of Kurukshetra. Later on the teachings of Shree Krishna encrypted in the form of "Gita". This form of Shree Krishna is known as Parthasarathy as He was the Sarathy (chariot driver) of Partha, (Arjun), the son of Pritha (Kunti-the first wife of Pandu).

Architecture

The Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple of Alleppy is designed in the typical Keralian style. The lifelike paintings of the 10 avatars of Shree Krishna is worth mentioning.
