Along the banks of the holy flow of Ganga, stands one of the oldest cities in the world. The city of Varanasi believed to be found by Lord Shiva himself is closely associate with many stories of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. The city with its spiritually essence entwined with divine mysticism is dotted with many temples, ashrams and other places of religious significance. Its many ghats, the embankments that drop down to the Ganga, are used for ritualistic bathing, pujas and cremation. Varanasi is estimated to have as many as 84 ghats and 23,000 temples. The huge flow of devotees, over the eras, to this sacred city in search for 'moksha' had made the Varanasi pilgrimage into one of the venerated journeys in ones lifetime.

Legend

Legends say that Varanasi was founded by Lord Shiva himself. The Pandavas, are also said to have visited the city in search of Shiva to atone for their sin of fratricide.Through the many pages of history, Varanasi has remained a prominent spiritual and religious destination. From Buddha to Adi Shankara, Kabir to Guru Nanak, Mughals to Marathas, spiritual leaders, poets, and rulers have contributed to the rise of Varanasi as one of the revered places in the country. Regarded as one of seven holy cities, the journey to Varanasi is believed to provide 'Moksha'. The travel to this sacred spot has been conducted by pious devotees since time immemorial to worship the Supreme one.

Climate

Varanasi has hot summers and pleasant winters. The summers have temperatures rising to the forties. July, August is the monsoon season. Winter days are pleasant. The night temperatures may dip to 10 degree celsius during peak winter season.
