Tungareshwar Shiva Temple
Located at Vasai East, Tungareshwar Shiva Temple is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is situated on one of the highest mountain plateaus in Vasai, 2177 feet above the ground. Tungareshwar, a collection of five mountains houses some very holy temples like those of Shiva, Kal Bhairav (avatar of Shiva), Jagmata temple (avatar of Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva), the Balyogi Sadanandh Maharaj Matth, etc.
According to the legends, Lord Parshurama killed a demon named 'Tunga' at this place. The temple was built in the honour of Lord Parshurama. Lord Parshurama meditated here in this place. It is believed that Adi Shankaracharya had meditated at a place near by Shuparak now called Sopara or Nalasopara.
The temple room was small, but beautifully decorated in Minimalistic works of colorful glass. On one corner of the room diya was lighting and there was small temple of Devi. Distance from Mumbai : Tungareshwar Temple and Waterfalls is about 60 Kilometres from Mumbai in Thane District starting at National Highway 8 taking about 1 hour and 40 minutes time to reach.
Exact location : 3 Kilometre from Vasai Phata Highway (Sativali Village), Starting at an entrance on left side towards Mumbai on National Highway 8 (Mumbai - Ahmedabad Highway). Their is no bus facilities but Shared and Private auto’s from Vasai Railway Station (East side) frequently available. Private cars can be taken till a point you feel safe and then walking and enjoying the trek is much preferred. Vasai station is on Western Railway Route, About an Hour train journey from Andheri suburbs.
Reaching by Car : If coming from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane area go straight towards Vasai Virar on NH8 and reach near Vasai Phata, Sativali Village. The entry point is on opposite side of the road below a flyover so keep a note of same. If by mistake you crossed the location you will see Toyota and Honda Showrooms on left and need to take a U turn again.
By Auto From Vasai : Their is no Meter System here and Share and Private auto’s takes you to the main entrance costing Rs.30 to Rs.35 per head in share auto and around Rs.150 in Private. From this entrance point the walk starts, Yet few Auto’s locally there can drive you till the temple directly. You might loose the fun on trek if did so. Kindly note, Auto rates might have changed.
