Saptapuri Yatra

The seven holy havens

In the seven parts of the country, radiating serene holiness and bestowing salvation to the devotees who come to them are the seven holy cities. These places called the Sapta Puris or Seven Tirthas are places where Gods have taken incarnation or those associated with their divinity. Ayodhya, Kanchipuram, Dwaraka, Mathura, Varanasi, Ujjain, Haridwar are these holy pilgrimage places reverberating with ethereal spiritual essence. The journey to these seven sites is called the Sapta Puri yatra, the circuit covering more than 5000kms and 5 states across the nation in search of eternal liberation.

Legend

The Sapta Puri are places where Gods have descended as avatars (incarnations) or sites associated with their faith. Ayodhya is where Lord Rama was believed to have been born, while Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna.  Dwaraka represents where Lord Krishna spent his time during his later years and Kanchipuram is known for its Kamakshi Amman Temple. Haridwar on the banks of Ganga with shrines of Shiva and Vishnu is the home of eternal holiness and Varanasi, with its many temples, the place for salvation. Ujjain(Avanti) is famous for its Jyotirlinga temple of Mahakaleshwar. It is believed that after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas visited all these points as an atonement for the sins of fratricide. These places have been the pilgrimage sites for ancient ascetics as well as saints and have been praised in many shlokas as the places for attaining moksha.
