Govindaraja Swamy Temple, Tirupati

Located at Tirupati, Govindaraja Swami Temple is dedicated to Lord Govindaraja Swami, the brother of Lord Venkateswara. It is the biggest temple in Tirupati. The temple houses two main shrines : the shrine to the north is dedicated to Lord Govindaraja Swamy and the shrine to the south to Sri Parthasarathi.

Legend

According to the legends, during the time of invasion, the idol of Sri Govindaraja Swamy was brought to Tirupati for safety. After the invasion, the idol was taken back to Chidambaram. One day Sri Ramanuja had a vision of Sri Govindaraja Swamy, in which the lord asked him to make arrangements for the Lord to reside in Tirupati. Architecture

The temple was built according to the ancient South Indian architecture. The temple has a seven storeys outer Gopuram that dates back to 14th -15th century. The inner Gopuram holds a decorative courtyard with a spaciousinner stone hall.Picture Courtesy : commons.wikimedia.org
