Dattatreya Temple Guru Shikhar, Atri Rishi Temple
Rajasthan , Sirohi
Guru Shikhar, a peak in the Arbuda Mountains of Rajasthan, is the highest point of the Aravalli Range. The shrines here are dedicated to the Sage Atri, Sage Dattatreya and his mother Anasuya. Sage Dattatreya is considered by many as an incarnation of the Trimurti. It is said that in 1778 AD, Prithviraj Chauhan, the last Hindu emperor of India, climbed along this road to Guru Shikhar after his marriage with the daughter of Prahladan.
Sage Atri is mentioned in Rig Vedas as one of the ancestors of human race. He is married to Anasuya and their son is Guru Dattatreya. Some sects regard Guru Dattatreya as an incarnation of Trimurti while some consider him to be an 'avatar' of Lord Vishnu. He is considered the Supreme Teacher for the knowledge of absolute truth.
The Guru Shikhar shrine is situated on the peak of the Aravalli range. The main temple is built on the side of the mountain. A fleet of steps from there lead to a white, rugged rock structure with a red dome. Guru Dattatreya's foot prints are worshipped here. A huge bell suspended from a wooden frame having an inscription of 1411 AD can be seen at the entrance of the temple. Breath taking views of the Aravalli range can be seen from this peak.
